Located along the East Coast Road in Peravurani, within the Pudukottai district, DGL School emerges as a direct response to its site geometry, climate, and evolving pedagogical needs. The architectural form is derived from the inherent triangular conditions of the plot, allowing the building to grow organically from its edges and corners rather than imposing a rigid, orthogonal grid.
This geometry informs both plan and section. Angled edges carve out dynamic internal spaces and circulation paths, creating moments of compression and release that enrich the spatial experience. The roof structure adopts a waffle slab system—both as an expressive and performative element—reducing structural weight while enabling longer spans and an articulated ceiling rhythm within classrooms.
Climate responsiveness is central to the design strategy. Large overhangs extend beyond the built envelope, shielding interiors from harsh coastal sunlight and monsoon rains. These deep projections, combined with carefully positioned openings, facilitate cross ventilation throughout the building, minimizing dependence on mechanical cooling. Skylights are strategically introduced to draw in controlled daylight, transforming corridors and learning spaces into luminous environments.
Light becomes a primary architectural material. As it filters through skylights and interacts with the waffle slab and angular geometries, it casts shifting patterns of shadow that animate the interiors across the day. These ephemeral qualities lend the school a sense of movement and time, turning everyday spaces into experiential environments.
The result is a school that is both contextually grounded and spatially dynamic—where form, structure, and climate work in unison to create an engaging and responsive learning environment.
