The Birla Open Minds School in Kollam, Kerala, is envisioned as a contemporary learning environment that draws inspiration from its natural terrain. The site, marked by contours and level differences, has been celebrated rather than flattened, allowing the design to flow with the land.

At the core of the masterplan is an amphitheatre-style courtyard, created by stepping into the slope. This central space functions as both a social heart and an informal learning arena, where students can gather, perform, or simply engage with the outdoors. Its terraced levels open to green vistas beyond the campus, strengthening the bond between indoor activity and the surrounding landscape.

The project is planned in two phases, with Phase 1 spanning 40,000 sq.ft. now under construction. This first phase establishes the primary academic blocks and shared spaces, designed to adapt to Kerala’s climate through careful orientation, shading devices, and natural ventilation strategies. By integrating terrain, greenery, and climate responsiveness, the school sets out to create an atmosphere that is environmentally sensitive, experientially diverse, and deeply conducive to holistic learning.
